Outlook 2011 / Applescript / PGP

Reported by Cory Johnson | February 1st, 2012 @ 12:31 AM

Hi,
Wondering if its possible to simplify the use of PGP content in Outlook 2011. Currently, PGP attachments show up in the Outlook 2011 message as a message.pgp attachment. I can successfully take this file, move it to a temp folder (say Desktop) and then decrypt using Services OpenPGP: Decrypt. This is then an .eml file so I add .eml as the file extension to the file and open it in Outlook again. The message opens up, no problem.

I'm wondering:
Easy way to automate with either AppleScript or GPGServices?

    Hi Cory,

GPGMail defaults to the only standard there is for sending OpenPGP Mails, which is PGP/MIME. The format you are referring to, is called PGP/Inline and is an undocumented non-standard format, which leads to several problems, which is why we default to PGP/MIME.

Nevertheless you can switch GPGMail to use OpenPGP/Inline. In that case you get the mail content as encrypted text instead of an attachment. So if you are stuck on Outlook, that might simplify the workflow. While this is not encouraged, we've added that option.
Find out how to do that here.

There's no difference in security level, yet you have to be aware, that while PGP/MIME also encrypts all attachments, OpenPGP/Inline does not!

Also, you're limited to text only. Any formatting will be ignored.

If you want to read more about the deficites of Inline/PGP you may want to read this note of Daniel Kahn Gillmore called Inline PGP signatures considered harmful.
