gpg --card-status fails with SCM Microsystems Inc. SPR 532

I purchased this card reader as it is supposedly supported.
I upgraded the f/w to 5.whatever.
openpgp-tool finds it.
lust% openpgp-tool
Using reader with a card: SCM Microsystems Inc. SPR 532
...
lust% gpg2 --card-status
gpg: selecting openpgp failed: Card error
gpg: OpenPGP card not available: Card error
Running OSX 10.11.6.
Just installed most recent GPG_Suite.
