Enigmail and MacGPG oddity ...

Reported by Bones | February 15th, 2011 @ 09:00 PM | in 2.0.18 (closed)

All,

Since upgrading to the latest MacGPG2 on all my machines, I have noticed a repeatable oddity in configuring Enigmail that I can't seem to resolve. After upgrading (2.0.16 -> 2.0.17-9) Enigmail will no longer find the 'gpg' executable in the default path: /usr/local/bin/gpg. To verify, here are the contents of the dir:

Mac:bin user$ ls -l
total 16
lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 19 Nov 15 15:41 gpg -> /usr/local/bin/gpg2
lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 27 Feb 15 11:41 gpg2 -> /usr/local/MacGPG2/bin/gpg2

At the command line, one symbolic link follows to the other no problem. But within Enigmail, so such luck. I have to manually override the path to '/usr/local/MacGPG2/bin/gpg2'. I am aware this appears to be more of an Enigmail issue, but wanted to verify before I posted to their forums that nothing had changed between 2.0.16 and 2.0.17 that could possibly have had an effect on this.

Cheers.

    This is related to Enigmail. Pls post this issue on their forum. We could also improve this situation a bit but Enigmail should be able to deal with it as it is. Also, if you like, pls report the outcome so we know if this is fixed on Enigmails side.

    Ok, So ...

    If you search the Enigmail forums for a thread titled Enigmail (1.1.2) can't find path after MaGPG2 2.0.17 upgrade you can see a conversation with Patrick, the Enigmail dev. A definitive answer was not found, but there appeared to be some glitch with MacGPG restarting the USER_AGENT after logging out and back in, post upgrade. In my experience on multiple machines this was not sufficient to restart the AGENT, and ultimately I had to uninstall/reinstall everything to get it to work properly. Since I don't see a lot of comments here from other users, maybe it was just me.

    Either way, hope this helped somebody.

    Cheers.

    Since a re-install helped and we're not sure what caused this initially setting this to resolved. If this should re-occur we'll have a closer look.
