Cannot export keys; "Nothing Imported!" Error

Reported by Brian Webb | May 14th, 2011 @ 03:21 PM | in 0.9 (closed)

When trying to export any of my keys (public or private) to a local directory/file, the file name I chose (xxxxxx.asc) is properly created, but when I open the asc file, "Nothing Imported!" is displayed. I've tried every way to export provided (button, menu bar, etc.) with the same result. I am running the latest versions of the GPG Keychain and run on Mac OS X 10.6.7 using a Mac 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7 with 8 GB Ram.

I have this same error on a very similar system except it happens when I try to import someone's public key.

Here is the email I sent to gpgtools-users@lists.gpgtools.org:
I downloaded GPGTools for Mac successfully and created a key in GPG Keychain Access. Now I'm trying to import someone else's public key and I continue to get the error: "Nothing Imported!" I've tried to upload the public key as a few different file types to no avail (is there one you recommend on a Mac?). My end goal is to simply encode a short message and then copy-paste it into a message box to send. My probably is I can't encrypt a message without loading the public key into the GPG Keychain.

    Thanks!

This is what I answered (but unfortunately only to the list you sent the mail to):

    Hi,

    Thank you for your mail.

    > Now I'm trying to import someone else's public key and I continue to get the error: "Nothing Imported!"

This could have two causes: 1. You already imported the key. 2. You're
importing something that is not a key. Could you provide us the public
    key?

    > I've tried to upload the public key as a few different file types to no avail (is there one you recommend on a Mac?).

    I don't understand this question.

    > My end goal is to simply encode a short message and then copy-paste it into a message box to send.

This is what GPGTools, in particular GPGServices, is about. Should be very easy.

Btw: This bug report here is different to your issue.

    Mento,

On a whim, I bought and loaded iPhone app iPGMail and was able to use the file transfer method the author recommends directly to my connected iPhone. I was able to transfer my public and private keys that I'd generated using GPG Keychain Access (same ones as this trouble ticket) as .asc files even though GPG Keychain Access indicated that both "Nothing Imported!" errors. The point I am trying to make is that .asc key files that I'd generated were actually populated with the correct information and I was able to successfully send and receive test messages using this key pair. Maybe you already know this...just trying to help. Thank you for your effort!
