Delete key dialogue box is confusing

Reported by Sam Kuper | April 21st, 2011 @ 11:55 PM | in Q2 2011 (closed)

I just tried to delete a key. I was presented with a dialogue box that said (I've blocked out personal details with square brackets):

Attempting to delete key [My name] <[my email address]>, [a hash value of some sort].

You are about to delete a secret key. Once it is gone, you will no longer be able to decrypt messages that were encrypted to this key. Are you sure you want to do this?

followed by three buttons:

  • Delete both
  • Cancel
  • Delete secret key only

This is confusing, because the phrase "Delete both" implies that upon clicking the button bearing that phrase, something will be deleted in addition to the secret key mentioned in the text of the dialogue box, but nowhere in the dialogue box is it explained what this extra thing is that will be deleted.

Nor is it explained what will happen to this other thing (will it linger somewhere? If so, where, and in what form, and why might the user want this?) if the user instead clicks, "Delete secret key only".
