Allow creation of folders in GPG Keychain Access

Reported by xilni | August 22nd, 2014 @ 05:56 PM | in 1.2 (closed)

I've begun to amass quite a few public keys including some expired keys that I keep for viewing old messages.

Would it be possible to add folders to the GPG Keychain Access main window?

The folders wouldn't have to actually modify the functioning of the keys or GPG at all, merely a UI feature that would allow me to organize my keys into folders for my own organizing purposes. For example, I'd have one folder for expired keys that I still need to retain, another for keys of organizations that I use to verify their security releases, another for keys of persons I communicate with, the uses are endless.

Implementation could take the form of a toolbar button to add folder as well as right clicking on a folder would give the option to delete the folder with a further option in the delete confirmation window to delete all the contained keys (with an additional confirmation window for that delete as well if you want).

    Hi Xilni.

We hear you. But I doubt this will be solved via folders, since adding several layers wouldn't improve things rather create confusion and I'm sure a ton of users would be showing up in support.

But maybe this can be solved via options that hide revoked keys (or show them if deactivated).

Not entirely sure, I understand your first sentence though: You cannot view encrypted messages with only the public key. So if you have expired pub keys, you can just delete them from GPG Keychain Access because you cannot do anything with those.

If you have more questions, please open a discussion on our support platform. You can also post feature requests there. This here is our bug tracker.

    All the best,
