Add support for fetching keys from keybase.io
Reported by James Moore | February 14th, 2014 @ 07:18 PM | in 1.10 (closed)
https://keybase.io is a new site that I think will help to create a richer WoT. They've published their API and it would be create if GPG KA could find keys in their system.
From the website:
"Keybase will be a public directory of publicly auditable public keys. All paired, for convenience, with unique usernames."
It would be great if GKA could provide a search interface for
those keys.
The user could enter the username of their keybase.io account and
GKA would fetch the public key from:
https://keybase.io/username/key.asc
if it exists.
The keybase.io search could be integrated in the current search window, which would show two tabs. One for normal key search and one for special keybase.io key search.

I second this request. it is currently very easy to upload fake GPG keys to key servers in someone else's name. It offloads the responsibility for proper verification to the potential sender of the encrypted message rather than the key owner. The burden to properly verify that someone is who they claim they are should be with that person. keybase.io goes good steps in that direction and provides a better model of assurance that a person is who they claim to be than the current key server system. Trust in PGP actually working for end users has to be strengthened by lowering the barrier to actual genuine trustworthy encryption without having to rely on a web of trust that can only be achieved through relatively complicated means like key signing parties.

Sadly keybase was bought by Zoom Video Communications Inc. and development of keybase has been on a bare minimum for the past months. Their desktop client finder integration has been broken on macOS Catalina for months and there is no sign of them being even aware of the problem.
Marking this ticket here
wontfix
.We are now in a more solid state thanks to https://keys.openpgp.org/ being the new default key server which has worked reliably since 2019.
