add comments or tags feature to allow users to have better key management
Reported by Support | December 16th, 2011 @ 09:46 AM
Currently GPG Keychain does not offer any option for useful key management or organization.
There have been various requests for such features and we yet have to figure out, how exactely this can be solved.
-
comments: allow users to make a note on a specific key in key inspector. This can be used in various ways e.g. to note down to verify a key later or note a board name of a user.
-
tags: in key inspector allow users to assign tags to individual tags. make tags available via a column in the main view and then they'd be able to sort keys after tags

Assigned to Tender discussion #1782.
use case reported:
Managing keys would be easier if they could be grouped into folders, alternatively be assigned customizable labels. Seeing only one folder/group at a time makes it much easier to keep track of what keys I have or not have and for what purposes.
A practical current case: a certain group I am a member of does not want to use key servers for privacy reasons. We send out new or updated keys manually. It would be so much better if we could select a group of keys and export them all to a file and send that file out.
I envisage that this grouping would "only" be a display feature, i.e not necessarily reflected in the physical storage in ~/.gnupg/, because if the structure of .gnupg/ would be changed then that might perhaps cause compatibility problems. The grouping into folders/labels would thus be metadata.
I haven't seen this feature request been discussed earlier, so I'd like to hear your thoughts about it, and how many others would appreciate such a feature.

Pierre reports: "After adding a few keys, which label can not be changed and is assigned by creator, I can’t find the key I want. I’d like to be able to put them in folders to keep some organisation in the listing : i.e. My keys, Websites keys, Friends Email keys, My Servers Keys, Other keys"

Ability to add arbitrary notes would be great. Would help tremendously in keeping track of keys in large keyrings, especially when in the process of signing keys (keysigning party, etc)
Should be much easier than adding folders, grouping labels, etc and, if sortable, could kinda work for those use cases:
Users just create a "tag" for each category, eg
#signed
,#not-signed
,#no-keyservers
, etc and sort by that column. -
