'Gathering random info' dialog disappears and no key is generated.
Reported by Corellian | January 26th, 2011 @ 12:30 PM | in 0.8.13 (closed)
Hi,
I'm using 0.8.2b GPG Keychain Access, and when I try to generate a RSA and RSA (2048) keypair, I click 'generate key' button and appears the dialog with the progress bar (gathering random info) for a second, then disappears and no keys are generated.
Using OS X 10.6.6

Also, how long did you wait and what happens? You get the spinning beachball of death? GPG Keychain Access crashes? You have to force quit it?
Have you tried running the latest GPGTools Installer from:

I have installed GPGTools only.
It does appear only for a second or less, there's no time to read the text above the progress bar.

There's no crash, no spinning beachball of death. Only disappears and nothing has happened.

I've downloaded & installed it yesterday, but today I've updated the GPG Keychain Access to 0.8.2b.
Where should I find which version I've installed? -

I'll download the latest GPGTools Installer, and see what it happens.

I've installed the latest version of GPGTools, and now it generates the key, but as long as I see the new key in the list, the spinning beachball of death appears. I wait doing other things, and when I try to see if it finished, blam! "Application is not responding".

Doesn't sound nice. Depending on the length of the key this process can take up to several minutes. How long have you been waiting. the beachball doesn't have to be a bad sign. It could also mean the application is busy. How long did you wait?

Maybe try to rename ~/.gnupg/gpg.conf and install GPGTools again.

I've waited less than 10 seconds. The key has been created unexpectedly fast, and as long as it has been created the spinning beachball appeared, then I switched "focus" to another application, and a few seconds later I switched back to the Keychain Access, but no window appeared, the Keychain was not responding.

I've deleted the newly generated key, and generated another one, identical. This time everything worked well. But the key has been generated almost instantly! That's strange, isn't it?
-
Corellian January 26th, 2011 @ 04:03 PM
I've created a 4096 key and now I had to wait a little more.

Sounds like now everything is working as expected on your system. Any further questions? Did you test the keys?

Another thing is, I can't retrieve other keys from a keyserver, always it responds: "Nothing imported". And that's what's logged:
26/01/11 16:09:22 GPG Keychain Access[5310] receiveKeysWithPattern: --recv-keys für "{(
9D928C9B, A4AE57A3
)}" fehlgeschlagen.

What keyserver are you using? Just try another keyserver. You can change that in the settings. Some of them are having issues atm. I also had some trouble in the last couple of days.

The default keyserver simply failed with "Error!" message.
I switched to "pgp.mit.edu" keyserver, and now it finds keys, but cannot receive it. Always end with "Nothing imported". -
steve January 26th, 2011 @ 04:55 PM
that can't be. did you select the key you want to import? or try another keyserver?
-
Corellian January 26th, 2011 @ 04:59 PM
Yes, I've selected the key I want to import.
I've done through command line with pgp.mit.edu and it works.
