Enigmail Addon for Thunderbird 5 not working
Reported by Moritz Schlarb | July 13th, 2011 @ 06:29 PM | in 20120317 (closed)
I used the current Installer from http://www.gpgtools.org/installer/index.html on a brand new Thunderbird installation on my 32-bit Mac OS 10.6.7
When I click OpenPGP->Settings in Thunderbird I get the
following error message (translated from german)
The GPG-Agent for your GnuPG version 2.0.17 could not be
started.

Thank you for your report. Related to MacGPG2 -> Benjamin.
Could you give us some more details? E.g. by using https://github.com/GPGTools/GPGTools/wiki/Troubleshooting#debug and a screenshot of the Enigmail OpenPGP Preference window? -

I can confirm this issue as well. The problem goes away if I manually run
gpg-agent --daemon
from a terminal before starting Thunderbird; otherwise, no matter what I do, enigmail will always claim 1. it cannot start gpg-agent, and 2. it cannot find the gpg executable. The various errors are:Could not find GnuPG.
Unable to locate GnuPG program.
The Wizard could not find the GnuPG executable.
Could not start the gpg-agent program which is needed for your GnuPG version 2.0.17. -

@Benjamin: do you have an idea what the issue might be? @Snover/Moritz: could you attach the debug output from the above mentioned URL?

I've attached the debug tool report for you!
(Since I'm using German as my system language, I ran the script using $ LANG=C sh debugGPGTools.sh You could add this to your wiki site, so you will always receive the debug log in english ;)And I've attached two screenshots of Thunderbird!

Could you set the gpg path to /usr/local/bin/gpg? Does this fix your issue? We've to figure out why Thunderbird doesn't find gpg in your path. What is the output of "echo $PATH"? And thank you for the hint regarding the language.

I get
which gpg
/usr/local/bin/gpg and
echo $PATH
/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.7/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/opt/X11/bin:/usr/local/MacGPG2/bin:/usr/X11/bin:/opt/local/bin:/usr/local/git/bin When I start gpg-agent --daemon, it works just fine!
Seems like Enigmail couldn't start gpg-agent properly!I also noticed, that gpg-agent has an option --launchd, wouldn't that be
the best option for Mac OS ? -
Moritz Schlarb July 20th, 2011 @ 11:52 PM
Oh, and manually setting the Path to gpg to /usr/local/bin/gpg didn't work, same error message as before!
When I start gpg-agent and access the settings menu, the path is: /usr/local/MacGPG2/bin/gpg2

There seem to some people with this issue and Benjamin is not responding right now. Let's try to find and solve the issue. Afaik the file /Library/LaunchAgents/org.gpgtools.macgpg2.gpg-agent.plist automatically starts the agent. When you restart your computer there is no gpg-agent process? (ps waux|grep gpg-agent)

I had the same problem. It looks like the underlying issue is that the gpg-agent process is not running. If I start the process manually by typing "gpg-agent --daemon" in the terminal, and then restart Thunderbird, everything works until I restart the computer.

The file "/Library/LaunchAgents/org.gpgtools.macgpg2.gpg-agent.plist" should take care about this. Could you all please re-run the latest installer and confirm that this issue here is still valid?
